tive sense. In Marcel ProustÕs novel Remembrance of Things Past, the nostalgic ßavor and fragrance of a madeleine, a delicate pastry, evokes a description of taste and smell, the senses that Òalone, more fragile but more enduring, more unsubstantial, more persistent. . . bear unßinchingly, in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection.Ó Humans often view smell as an aesthetic sense, yet for most animals smell is the primal sense, one they rely on to identify food, predators and mates. Indeed, for many organisms, odors are their most efficient means of communicating with others and interpreting their surroundings. Innate behavior in response to smell is essential to these organismsÕ survival and most likely results from nonconscious perception of odors. Each individual has a unique, genetically determined scent. This olfactory identity is coupled with a remarkable ability to distinguish a diversity of odors. Humans, for instance, can recognize approximately 10,000 scents, ranging from the pleasurable scent of freshly cut ßowers to the aversive smell of an angry skunk. Many animals have an even greater sensitivity to odors than humans do: bloodhounds, for example, are legendary for their extraordinary ability to discriminate scents. The wide spectrum of odors that humans consciously detect prompt varied emotional and cognitive responses. But do humans recognize other smells without a conscious awareness of this perception, and do such odors elicit innate behavioral responses? How does the perception of speciÞc odors lead to appropriate thoughts, memories and behaviors? Whether smell is primal or aesthetic to a species, all organisms must have developed in the course of evolution mechanisms to recognize various odors and transmit this olfactory information from the nose to the brain, where it is decoded to provide an interThe Molecular Logic of Smell

Anatomy, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry of the olfactory subsystems in mice

The four regions of the murine nasal cavity featuring olfactory neurons were studied anatomically and by labeling with lectins and relevant antibodies with a view to establishing criteria for the identification of olfactory subsystems that are readily applicable to other mammals. In the main olfactory epithelium and the septal organ the olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are embedded in quasi-str...

Microsmatic primates: reconsidering how and when size matters.

The terms "microsmatic" and "macrosmatic" refer to species with lesser or greater levels, respectively, of olfactory function. Historically, primates are considered microsmats (olfactory sense reduced) with a concomitant increased emphasis on vision. The olfactory bulbs (forebrain centers that receive peripheral olfactory input) are proportionately smaller in primates compared to most other mam...

The nasal cavity and its olfactory sensory territories

Citation: Salazar I (2015) The nasal cavity and its olfactory sensory territories. The sense of smell is more complex than previously believed. For different reasons, the receptors traditionally thought of having the ability to identify chemical olfactory signals were exclusively confined to the epithelium of the mucosa lining both the posterior part of the walls of the nasal cavity and the eth...

Phylogenic outline of the olfactory system in vertebrates.

Phylogenic outline of the vertebrate olfactory system is summarized in the present review. In the fish and the birds, the olfactory system consists only of the olfactory epithelium (OE) and the olfactory bulb (B). In the amphibians, reptiles and mammals, the olfactory system is subdivided into the main olfactory and the vomeronasal olfactory systems, and the former consists of the OE and the ma...

Lungfishes, Like Tetrapods, Possess a Vomeronasal System

The vomeronasal system (VNS) is an accessory olfactory system that in tetrapod vertebrates is composed of specific receptor neurons in the nasal organ and a set of centers in the forebrain that receive and relay the information consecutively towards the hypothalamus. Thus, only in tetrapods the VNS comprises a discrete vomeronasal (Jacobson's) organ, which contains receptor cells that are morph...

A descriptive and comparative lectin histochemical study of the vomeronasal system in pigs and sheep.

The accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) is the primary target of the sensory epithelium of the vomeronasal organ (VNO), and thus constitutes a fundamental component of the accessory olfactory system, which is involved in responses to behaviour-related olfactory stimuli. In this study we investigated the characteristics of the AOB, VNO, vomeronasal nerves (VNNs) and caudal nasal nerve (CdNN) in pigs ...
